Prophet Noah

NOAH,  CHAPTER NO.  071

071.001  We sent Noah to his People (with the Command): "Do thou warn thy People
before there comes to them a grievous Penalty."
071.002  He said: "O my People! I am to you a Warner, clear and open:
071.003  "That ye should worship God, fear Him and obey me:
071.004  "So He may forgive you your sins and give you respite for a stated Term: for
when the Term given by God is accomplished, it cannot be put forward: if ye only
knew."

071.005  He said: "O my Lord! I have called to my People night and day:
071.006  "But my call only increases (their) flight (from the Right).
071.007  "And every time I have called to them, that Thou mightest forgive them,
they have (only) thrust their fingers into their ears, covered themselves up with their
garments, grown obstinate, and given themselves up to arrogance.
071.008  "So I have called to them aloud;
071.009  "Further I have spoken to them in public and secretly in private,
071.010  "Saying, 'Ask forgiveness from your Lord; for He is Oft-Forgiving;
071.011  "'He will send rain to you in abundance;
071.012  "'Give you increase in wealth and sons; and bestow on you gardens and
bestow on you rivers (of flowing water).

071.013  "'What is the matter with you, that ye place not your hope for kindness and
long-suffering in God,-
071.014  "'Seeing that it is He that has created you in diverse stages?
071.015  "'See ye not how God has created the seven heavens one above another,
071.016  "'And made the moon a light in their midst, and made the sun as a (Glorious)
Lamp?
071.017  "'And God has produced you from the earth growing (gradually),
071.018  "'And in the End He will return you into the (earth), and raise you forth
(again at the Resurrection)?
071.019  "'And God has made the earth for you as a carpet (spread out),
071.020  "'That ye may go about therein, in spacious roads.'"

071.021  Noah said: "O my Lord! They have disobeyed me, but they follow (men)
whose wealth and children give them no increase but only Loss.
071.022  "And they have devised a tremendous Plot.
071.023  "And they have said (to each other), 'Abandon not your gods: Abandon
neither Wadd nor Suwa', neither Yaguth nor Ya'uq, nor Nasr';-
071.024  "They have already misled many; and grant Thou no increase to the wrong-
doers but in straying (from their mark)."
071.025  Because of their sins they were drowned (in the flood), and were made to
enter the Fire (of Punishment): and they found- in lieu of God- none to help them.

071.026  And Noah, said: "O my Lord! Leave not of the Unbelievers, a single one on
earth!

This prayer of prophet Noah came after a long 950 years of preaching.

071.027  "For, if Thou dost leave (any of) them, they will but mislead Thy devotees,
and they will breed none but wicked ungrateful ones.
071.028  "O my Lord! Forgive me, my parents, all who enter my house in Faith, and
(all) believing men and believing women: and to the wrong-doers grant Thou no
increase but in perdition!"
 

004.163  We have sent thee inspiration, as We sent it to Noah and the Messengers
after him: we sent inspiration to Abraham, Isma'il, Isaac, Jacob and the Tribes, to
Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, and solomon, and to David We gave the Psalms.

The following verses describe his mission briefly:
 

007.059  We sent Noah to his people. He said: "O my people! worship God! ye have
no other god but Him. I fear for you the punishment of a dreadful day!
007.060  The leaders of his people said: "Ah! we see thee evidently wandering (in
mind)."
007.061  He said: "O my people! No wandering is there in my (mind): on the contrary
I am an apostle from the Lord and Cherisher of the worlds!
007.062  "I but fulfil towards you the duties of my Lord's mission: Sincere is my
advice to you, and I know from God something that ye know not.
007.063  "Do ye wonder that there hath come to you a message from your Lord,
through a man of your own people, to warn you,- so that ye may fear God and haply
receive His Mercy?"
007.064  But they rejected him, and We delivered him, and those with him, in the
Ark: but We overwhelmed in the flood those who rejected Our signs. They were
indeed a blind people!

The following verses clearly tell us that the people of the Ark inheritted the earth and we are all their descendants.
 

017.003  O ye that are sprung from those whom We carried (in the Ark) with Noah!
Verily he was a devotee most grateful.

010.071  Relate to them the story of Noah. Behold! he said to his people: "O my
people, if it be hard on your (mind) that I should stay (with you) and commemorate
the signs of God,- yet I put my trust in God.  Get ye then an agreement about your
plan and among your partners, so your plan be on to you dark and dubious. Then pass
your sentence on me, and give me no respite.
010.072  "But if ye turn back, (consider): no reward have I asked of you: my reward
is only due from God, and I have been commanded to be of those who submit to
God's will (in Islam)."
010.073  They rejected Him, but We delivered him, and those with him, in the Ark,
and We made them inherit (the earth), while We overwhelmed in the flood those who
rejected Our Signs. Then see what was the end of those who were warned (but heeded
not)!

A more detailed account of what happened to the people of Noah and the building of Ark and fload is given in the following verses of the Quran:
 

011.025  We sent Noah to his people (with a mission): "I have come to you with a
Clear Warning:
011.026  "That ye serve none but God: Verily I do fear for you the penalty of a
grievous day."
011.027  But the chiefs of the Unbelievers among his people said: "We see (in) thee
nothing but a man like ourselves:  Nor do we see that any follow thee but the meanest
among us, in judgment immature:  Nor do we see in you (all) any merit above us: in
fact we thing ye are liars!"
011.028  He said: "O my people! See ye if (it be that) I have a Clear Sign from my
Lord, and that He hath sent Mercy unto me from His own presence, but that the
Mercy hath been obscured from your sight? shall we compel you to accept it when ye
are averse to it?
011.029  "And O my people! I ask you for no wealth in return: my reward is from
none but God: But I will not drive away (in contempt) those who believe: for verily
they are to meet their Lord, and ye I see are the ignorant ones!
011.030  "And O my people! who would help me against God if I drove them away?
Will ye not then take heed?
011.031  "I tell you not that with me are the treasures of God, nor do I know what is
hidden, nor claim I to be an angel. Nor yet do I say, of those whom your eyes do
despise that God will not grant them (all) that is good:  God knoweth best what is in
their souls: I should, if I did, indeed be a wrong-doer."
011.032  They said: "O Noah! thou hast disputed with us, and (much) hast thou
prolonged the dispute with us: now bring upon us what thou threatenest us with, if
thou speakest the truth!?"
011.033  He said: "Truly, God will bring it on you if He wills,- and then, ye will not
be able to frustrate it!
011.034  "Of no profit will be my counsel to you, much as I desire to give you (good)
counsel, if it be that God willeth to leave you astray: He is your Lord! and to Him will
ye return!"
011.035  Or do they say, "He has forged it"? Say: "If I had forged it, on me were my
sin! and I am free of the sins of  which ye are guilty!

011.036  It was revealed to Noah: "None of thy people will believe except those who
have believed already! So grieve no longer over their (evil) deeds.
011.037  "But construct an Ark under Our eyes and Our inspiration, and address Me
no (further) on behalf of those who are in sin: for they are about to be overwhelmed
(in the Flood)."
011.038  Forthwith he (starts) constructing the Ark: Every time that the chiefs of his
people passed by him,  they threw ridicule on him. He said: "If ye ridicule us now, we
(in our turn) can look down on you with ridicule likewise!
011.039  "But soon will ye know who it is on whom will descend a penalty that will
cover them with shame,- on whom will be unloosed a penalty lasting:"

011.040  At length, behold! there came Our command, and the fountains of the earth
gushed forth! We said: "Embark therein, of each kind two, male and female, and your
family - except those against whom the word has already gone forth,- and the
Believers." but only a few believed with him.
011.041  So he said: "Embark ye on the Ark, In the name of God, whether it move or
be at rest! For my Lord is, be sure, Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful!"
011.042  So the Ark floated with them on the waves (towering) like mountains, and
Noah called out to his son, who had separated himself (from the rest): "O my son!
embark with us, and be not with the unbelievers!"
011.043  The son replied: "I will betake myself to some mountain: it will save me
from the water." Noah said: "This day nothing can save, from the command of God,
any but those on whom He hath mercy! "And the waves came between them, and the
son was among those overwhelmed in the Flood.

011.044  Then the word went forth: "O earth! swallow up thy water, and O sky!
Withhold (thy rain)!" and the water abated, and the matter was ended. The Ark rested
on Mount Judi, and the word went forth: "Away with those who do wrong!"

011.045  And Noah called upon his Lord, and said: "O my Lord! surely my son is of
my family! and Thy promise is true, and Thou art the justest of Judges!"
011.046  He said: "O Noah! He is not of thy family: For his conduct is unrighteous.
So ask not of Me that of which thou hast no knowledge! I give thee counsel, lest thou
act like the ignorant!"
011.047  Noah said: "O my Lord! I do seek refuge with Thee, lest I ask Thee for that
of which I have no knowledge. And unless thou forgive me and have Mercy on me, I
should indeed be lost!"

011.048  The word came: "O Noah! Come down (from the Ark) with peace from Us,
and blessing on thee and on some of the peoples (who will spring) from those with
thee: but (there will be other) peoples to whom We shall grant their pleasures (for a
time), but in the end will a grievous penalty reach them from Us."
 

011.049  Such are some of the stories of the unseen, which We have revealed unto
thee: before this, neither thou nor thy people knew them. So persevere patiently: for
the End is for those who are righteous.

Another brief narration is given in the following verses:

023.023  (Further, We sent a long line of prophets for your instruction). We sent
Noah to his people: He said, "O my people! worship God! Ye have no other god but
Him. Will ye not fear (Him)?"
023.024  The chiefs of the Unbelievers among his people said: "He is no more than a
man like yourselves: his wish is to assert his superiority over you: if God had wished
(to send messengers), He could have sent down angels; never did we hear such a
thing (as he says), among our ancestors of old."
023.025  (And some said): "He is only a man possessed: wait (and have patience)
with him for a time."
023.026  (Noah) said: "O my Lord! help me: for that they accuse me of falsehood!"
023.027  So We inspired him (with this message): "Construct the Ark within Our
sight and under Our guidance: then when comes Our Command, and the fountains of
the earth gush forth, take thou on board pairs of every species, male and female, and
thy family- except those of them against whom the Word has already gone forth: And
address Me not in favour of the wrong-doers; for they shall be drowned (in the
Flood).
023.028  And when thou hast embarked on the Ark - thou and those with thee,- say:
"Praise be to God, Who has saved us from the people who do wrong."
023.029  And say: "O my Lord! enable me to disembark with thy blessing: for Thou
art the Best to enable (us) to disembark."

023.030  Verily in this there are Signs (for men to understand); (thus) do We try
(men).
 

026.105  The people of Noah rejected the apostles.
026.106  Behold, their brother Noah said to them: "Will ye not fear (God)?
026.107  "I am to you an apostle worthy of all trust:
026.108  "So fear God, and obey me.
026.109  "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the
Worlds:
026.110  "So fear God, and obey me."
026.111  They said: "Shall we believe in thee when it is the meanest that follow
thee?"
026.112  He said: "And what do I know as to what they do?
026.113  "Their account is only with my Lord, if ye could (but) understand.
026.114  "I am not one to drive away those who believe.
026.115  "I am sent only to warn plainly in public."
026.116  They said: "If thou desist not, O Noah! thou shalt be stoned (to death)."
026.117  He said: "O my Lord! truly my people have rejected me.
026.118  "Judge Thou, then, between me and them openly, and deliver me and those
of the Believers who are with me."
026.119  So We delivered him and those with him, in the Ark filled (with all
creatures).
026.120  Thereafter We drowned those who remained behind.
026.121  Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe.
026.122  And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful.
 

029.014  We (once) sent Noah to his people, and he tarried among them a thousand
years less fifty: but the Deluge overwhelmed them while they (persisted in) sin.
029.015  But We saved him and the companions of the Ark, and We made the (Ark) a
Sign for all peoples!
 

054.009  Before them the People of Noah rejected (their apostle):  they rejected Our
servant, and said, "Here is one possessed!", and he was driven out.
054.010  Then he called on his Lord: "I am one overcome: do Thou then help (me)!"
054.011  So We opened the gates of heaven, with water pouring forth.
054.012  And We caused the earth to gush forth with springs, so the waters met (and
rose) to the extent decreed.
054.013  But We bore him on an (Ark) made of broad planks and caulked with palm-
fibre:
054.014  She floats under our eyes (and care): a recompense to one who had been
rejected (with scorn)!
054.015  And We have left this as a Sign (for all time): then is there any that will
receive  admonition?
054.016  But how (terrible) was My Penalty and My Warning?

054.017  And We have indeed made the Qur'an easy to understand and remember:
then is there any that will receive admonition?
 

066.010  God sets forth, for an example to the Unbelievers, the wife of Noah and the
wife of Lut: they were (respectively) under two of our righteous servants, but they
were false to their (husbands), and they profited nothing before God on their account,
but were told: "Enter ye the Fire along with (others) that enter!"
